The Biltmores Same story, same ending

Straight from Providence College, I would like to welcome, The Biltmores (http://www.myspace.com/thebiltmores). Get to know them, because they will kick your skinny little ass. Unless your ass is huge, then they will kick it multiple times for the same effect.

Anyways… Let’s get on to the review. The CD is called “Same Story, Same Ending”, in case you didn’t know for some reason. I’ve been listening to this CD like crazy for the past few days, and its not just because I have to review, but I just can’t enough of it. The songs have a way to get under your skin and creep deep into your brain, and just pops up at random times. You find your self singing some of the songs aloud to the world and not really realizing it, until you notice the blank stares from all the people around you.

This CD has a very Indie sound that’s spiced up with some folk. I can’t say I listen to a lot of Indie music, but from my experience, I say these guys sound like a mix between The Raconteurs, Pavement, a little bit of Islands, and some other fourth thing that I can’t put my finger on. The great thing about this CD is the great amount of variety within the songs. There are songs about love, songs about getting up in life, and songs about living in heated domes underneath the ground, and a song about killing off the human race with robot powers. It doesn’t get much better than that. The music is also very varied as well. The first few songs have a similar vibe going, which you get used to. So your figure that you got these guys all figured that BAM they through in a song like “She lives inside of me” and just completely blows your mind. Not to mention the completely bare bones, folk intro to “Pigeon Blacktop” with everything from a banjo to a violin. Just put, it’s simply amazing. Epic even.

Another thing I like about this CD is the simple but catchy guitar riffs. I like the fact that they through in flats all through out the songs, instead of keeping to the usual boring major scales. I also like the singers voice, there’s some sort of twang in there that makes the songs so much more enjoyable.

I also wanted to note the great production values of the CD. Holy crap! It’s really hard to believe these guys are local when you listen to the CD. The quality is top notch. I also wanted to mention, that these guys have been around for a mere nine months! (According to the video on their myspace that is).

The only negative thing I can think about the CD, is that some of the songs just kind of whimper on. I sometimes feel a lack of force and power behind the music. But this is a minor complaint, I seriously couldn’t think of anything else.

These guys are going places, and you would be wise to take a gander at this CD.

9 out of 10
(That’s an A- folks)
